How do I visit Kilmainham Gaol and should I book in advance?

Access is by guided tour only, and booking online is the only way to guarantee entry at the date and time of your choice. Additional and cancellation tickets for the current day are released online between 09:15 and 09:30. Visitors with special requirements should contact us directly at [email protected] to arrange their visit.

How far in advance can I book tickets?

Tickets go on sale 28 days in advance, released at midnight (Irish time).

How do I make a group booking?

Groups of 10 or more must be booked in advance by emailing [email protected]. Group bookings are allocated on a first come, first served basis and demand means we cannot facilitate every request.

What should I do if I cannot print my tickets?

Tickets can be printed at the reception desk on arrival — just bring your booking reference number, or the name or email address used for the booking.

Can I transfer my ticket to another day/time or receive a refund?

Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. If you book the wrong day or time, email us within one hour of booking and we can refund the card used. Please see the terms and conditions.

How long is the guided tour?

The guided tour lasts 1 hour. Allow another 30–45 minutes to explore the museum afterwards. Visitors holding tickets for the final two tours of the day are welcome to visit the museum beforehand.

I have a Heritage Card. Do I still need to buy a ticket on-line?

Yes — book a complimentary ticket online under the Heritage Card User option. You will need to present your card to validate the ticket. Heritage Cards can be bought on the day here or at any other OPW site.

Is Kilmainham Gaol wheelchair accessible?

Yes. A ground floor tour can be arranged for wheelchair users or visitors with mobility issues. Please contact us in advance at [email protected].

Do you accept international student cards?

All valid student cards are accepted, and must be produced on arrival to validate your ticket. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Is Kilmainham Gaol suitable for young children?

Because of the nature and length of the tour, it is not recommended for children under 6. Buggies and strollers are not permitted on the tour.

Are the guided tours in other languages?

Are there parking facilities at Kilmainham Gaol?

There is no car parking at the Gaol. Parking is available at the nearby Irish Museum of Modern Art / Royal Hospital Kilmainham, accessed via East Gate, Military Road — a 5 minute walk via West Avenue and Richmond Gate.

Is there a secure area to leave personal belongings?

There are no secure lockers, but a designated space in the entrance hall is available for large personal belongings. The area is covered by CCTV, however Kilmainham Gaol accepts no responsibility for lost or stolen items.
